The Power of Lifted Spirits in the Fight Against Childhood Cancer

As the Family Services Coordinator at Candlelighters Childhood Cancer Foundation of Nevada, and a childhood cancer survivor, I know firsthand how a toy during the holiday season can bring hope and joy to a child facing this terrible disease. More than 20 years ago, I vividly remember standing in a room in what felt like a sea of toys with the magical task of selecting one for the holidays. More than a toy, it was a distraction from my cancer and a symbol of someone’s love and support. All these years later, I know that toy was a sense of relief for my mother who was doing her best to provide me with a childhood despite her reduced work hours and mounting medical expenses.

That’s why I’m so excited to invite the Nevada community to join us in making a difference by contributing to our annual Holiday Toy Drive. These donations will replenish the Toy Closet at our new headquarters, a resource that brings joy and comfort to children and families during hospital stays, treatments, and special celebrations throughout the year.

For families navigating the uncertainty of a childhood cancer diagnosis, the holiday season can be particularly overwhelming. But with the Toy Closet, we can help create moments of happiness when they’re needed most. These gifts are more than just toys—they represent hope and a reminder to families that they are not alone in their journey. Getting to tell our kiddos, both those in treatment and siblings, to select a toy is always a highlight of my day. The anticipation of a new toy or the delight of being able to pick something special allows them to simply be a kid and to feel normal, and it is truly such an honor to be part of that moment.

In addition to the Toy Closet, Candlelighters provides a wide range of support services that foster healing and resilience. From financial assistance and emotional support to therapy programs and peer groups, we are here to stand alongside families as they navigate one of life’s toughest challenges. The Nevada community’s generosity allows us to continue this important work, and for that, I am deeply grateful.

If you’d like to contribute, you can donate toys or gift cards through our Amazon, Target, and Walmart wish lists, or drop them off directly at our office at 8990 Spanish Ridge Avenue, Suite 100. Your generosity fuels the spirit of connection and compassion that Candlelighters strives to provide year-round.

I encourage everyone to get involved in any way they can—whether through donations, volunteering, or even writing a message of encouragement for the families we serve. Small acts of kindness can make a tremendous impact. Together, we can ensure that every child and family feels supported, loved, and celebrated this holiday season. Thank you for being part of this incredible community effort to bring joy to those who need it most.
